History of Institute of Education

The Institute of Education was established in 1987/88 academic session under the Ondo State University. Act 4 sub-section 1 of 1982 as an Educational and Academic Unit of the University. Up till 2000/2001 Academic Session, the Institute was running sandwich Degree Programme at the same time teaching courses at the regular programme of the Faculty’s Cognate Departments according to the area of specialization of the members of staff.

However, a major change in policy was effected on the Institute of Education in May, 2002 by the University of Ado-Ekiti.  That change transferred the Sandwich programme to the Faculty of Education under new management while the Institute was made to concentrate on teaching and research in three major disciplines which are Nursery and Primary Education (now Childhood Education, Computer Science Education for the Bachelor’s Degree, the Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) and M.Ed and Ph.D in Social Studies on a regular basis.

In addition, the Institute’s efforts are exemplified through regular publication of journals, magazines and organization of annual workshops.  For example, the Institute’s Publication titled: “Tropical Issues in Research and Evaluation” “Occasional Publication and Educational Focus” are published annually, while a workshop on Research and Evaluation which embraces the participation of many University scholars is promoted and monitored in selected Nigerian Universities from year to year.

The Institute of Education has been under the leadership of various since its inception: Dr. M. F Alonge – Acting Director (1989 to 31st March, 1994), Dr S. O. Bandele – Acting Director (1994 to 1996), Dr. S. A. Adewuya – Acting Director (1996 to 1998), Dr. S. A. Bandele – (1998 to 1999), Dr. A. A. Akinlua – (1999 to 2001), Dr. E. B. Kolawole – (2008 to 2010), Dr. (Mrs) O. A. Adegun – (2010 to 2012), Dr. J. A. Oluwatayo – (2012 to 2014, Dr. (Mrs) G. O. Ofodu- (2014 to date)

The Department of Tests, Measurement and Evaluation took off immediately following the re-structuring of the Faculty of Education into Nine Departments with Dr. S. O. Adebule as the foundation Acting Head of Department. This followed the University Governing Council’s approval at its 113th meeting held on 10th October 2014 and the Vice-Chancellor’s directive on the take-off of the department via Ref. No: AD/FD.20/Vol. IV/213 dated 11th August, 2015.

However, the National Universities Commission did not approve the running of Test, Measurement and Evaluation at undergraduate level in the Faculty but only at the postgraduate level.  In view of this, Senate of the University at its 236th regular meeting held on Wednesday, 26th October, 2016 approved that the status of the Institute of Education be restored in place of Department of Test, Measurement and Evaluation and the Institute took off with the appointment of Ag. Director by the Vice-Chancellor.  The past Ag. Directors of the Institute were Dr S.O. Adebule (2015 – 2017); Dr C. S. Ayodele (2017 – 2019), Prof J.A. Oluwatayo (2019). Prof. S O Adebule (2019 – 2021), Prof. So. O Adebule (2021 – 2023).  The current Director is Prof. S.O. Adebule who was appointed in August, 2023.

Objectives of the Department

The following are the Objectives of the progroramme:

  1. To prepare qualified professionals in the field of Tests, Measurement and Evaluation.
  2. To meet the demand of the teaching profession for classroom testing in schools
  3. To train manpower needed in ministries, examination boards and parastatals at both States and Federal levels of our educational system
  4. To create a sound foundation for Post Graduate studies in the discipline of Tests, Measurement and Evaluation.
  5. To prepare professional evaluators for the demand of educational programmes in Nigeria.

Mission statement of the Department:

To offer high quality undergraduate and postgraduate programme in Tests, Measurement and Evaluation and carry out research that will permit our students to match up with international standard.

General services and academic programmes

The academic programmes and institutional activities of the Institute are facilitated through tutorials, classowirk and teaching practices for the award of Postgraduate Diploma, Masters and PhD degrees in Tests, Measurement and Evaluation. The running and management of the Institute depend on the following organs and administrative structure:

  1. The Head of Department and Chairman of Departmental Board.
  2. The Departmental Board consists of the Head of Department as Chairman and all Lecturers of the Department.
  3. The Department also sets up various committees to assist the Head of Department; such as the Academic Staff Review, Non-Teaching Staff Review, Admission Matters, Examination Matters, Research Fund Management, Journal and Handbook Publication, Departmental Week and Seminars and other statutory and special matters.
